Our “whatsit” this week is this unusual solid brass nameplate from New York Continental Jewell Filtration Company that is quite heavy and measures 4-1/4″ x 9″.
It’s not a flat nameplate like you would expect. As shown below, it’s slightly curved which is what makes it so unusual.
You might be inclined to believe that it’s just bent, but you’d be wrong. This large, heavy cast brass plate was designed to mount on something with a very large diameter. A little research shows that NY Continental Jewell Filtration Co. made industrial size water filters. Their 1913 catalog shows where this nameplate came from (pictures are from catalog link):
These gravity water filters were rather large in diameter which explains the curved nameplate. Even though I know nothing else about it, I’m glad the nameplate survived and made its way to me so I could enlighten you about The New York Continental Jewell Filtration Co. water purification equipment.
